Competition

Arnold Schönberg

This month you can win a CD on the
Pentatone label with the arrangement
by Arnold Schönberg of the Piano Quartet
opus 25 by Brahms if you know the correct answer to our competition question.

The question in our competition in June was:
Two works by Alexander Scriabin were per-
formed on 26, 27 and 28 October 1912, by
an orchestra that included Alexander Scriabin himself. The perfomance took place in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the con-
ductor was Willem Mengelberg. Which two
works were performed?

The correct answer was the Piano Concert in
F-sharp minor opus 20 and Prometheus (sym-
phony no. 5) opus 60. The winner of the
Scriabin CD by Mikhail Pletnev is Hugo de Jager. Congratulations!

This month's question

Tomaso AlbinoniComposer of the Month

The composer of the month in August is again Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751).

Albinoni was the child of wealthy parents and
was financially independent and so did not need commissions from the church, unlike may of his contemporaries. He was therefore able to write many operas, concertos and symphonies.

CD of the month: Birds Requiem

The CD of the month has been selected by Cobie Ivens (see Introducing...).
She has chosen Birds Requiem (Enja Records) by Dhafer Youssef from 2014 and has the following to say about her choice:

“Dhafer Youssef plays the oud and is a singer and composer. He was born in
Tunisia in 1967 into a simple family from the fishing village of Teboulba, and is descended from a long line of muezzins. The muezzin within the Islamic faith is
the person that calls the faithful to worship with the azan and the iqama. He
therefore performs the same role as the church bells in the Christian faith.Birds Requiem

Dhafer Youssef developed an interest in jazz
at an early age and later moved to Europe to pursue his jazz career. He has made 6 albums, and the latest one is Birds Requiem.”

The album was featured in a programme on the Concertzender on 27 Juni 2015. You can listen
to the programme here.

Introducing… Cobie IvensCobie Ivens

Cobie Ivens was born in 1946 in Rotterdam. She is a programme maker and the assistant coordinator World Music at the Concert-
zender.

“In March 2012 the World Music coordinator Carolien Cleiren advertised a vacancy on the Concertzender website. I had just retired and
the Concertzender was a perfect match with my musical tastes. I started as Carolien's assistant entering new CDs into the database. After a
couple of weeks she asked me to compile the programme Let's Hear It. In January 2013 I was also made responsible for the programme The Early World, and in June 2013 The Night: World Music was added. Occasionaly I was also asked to compile other programmes such as Mariama, World Minerals and The Night: Jazz.”
