Readers,
listeners,
“The chief objection of playing wind instruments is that it prolongs the life of the player.”
George Bernard Shaw (1856 – 1950)

Competition
This month, you can win the double CD of the War Requiem by Benjamin Britten, if you can answer our question correctly.
On
this winnable double CD, the work is performed by the Tölzer
Knabenchor, Chor und Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
conducted by Mariss Jansons, with soloists Emily Magee, Mark Padmore

however have a grand piano! The winner of the box set with piano works
by Ten Holt is Floris Sirag from Groningen. Congratulations!

Contemporary Music with Joost Kleppe
On Sunday 9 April, a new series of the programme
Contemporary Music will start. The Sunday episodes are made by
programme maker Miranda Driessen (see: Introducing).
Our monthly edition around composers who are working in the
Netherlands today, gets a new twist from that date on. The composer
featured, who helps compiling the programme, addresses a colleague he
or she holds dear and to whom he or she wants to pass on the next
broadcast. Hence the subtitle: Intime Briefe (Intimate Letters), after the string quartet of Leos Janacék.
In this first episode, composer Joost Kleppe reaches out to colleague Aspasia Nasopoulou.
Broadcast: Sunday 9 April, 17:00 - 18:00 hours, available for listening here
Acoustic Roots: The Folk Road Show
On Friday 14 April, The Folk Road Show are a guest at De Kargadoor for a new radio recording of Acoustic Roots.
The
Folk Road Show is an international musical collective, consisting of
five singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists from New Zealand,
Canada and the Netherlands. Each member contributes to the repertoire
with their writing, and they take turns in singing the lead vocals.
They alternate between the guitar, banjo, mandolin, trombone and the
drums. Their harmonies are exceptionally strong and they have been
compared with Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Epic trombone solos
The five give an eclectic, varied life show, both intimate and loud, from
whispered harmonies to indie-rock and completed with epic trombone
solos. The result is an enchanting sound and captivating show, that
simply exudes joy.

The Musician for amateur musicians
Up to 2009, the Concertzender broadcasted a programme for and with amateur musicians, entitled The Musician. Both this title and its content are returning, starting 6 April.
Every Thursday, from 14:00 to 15:00 hours, programme maker Katrijn
Kuypers looks at anything happening in the Netherlands in the world of
amateur music. Featuring recordings that are, and will be made, by the
Concertzender, and material that is handed to us 'from the field'. And
of course, a schedule with the latest from the amateur scene. Plus,
everything can be found on its special Theme Channel.
Tips and contributions are more than welcome. Katrijn is ready for them at: katrijn.kuypers@concertzender.nl
Broadcast: every Thursday starting 6 April, 14:00 - 15:00 hours.
Introducing: Miranda Driessen
In Contemporary Music, our programme on today's
music, one of its compilers Miranda Driessen, interviews Dutch
composers every month. At the end of the broadcast, the interviewee
picks the next guest for the upcoming month. On Sunday 16 April, a new
line of interviews starts, following a new format.
“The programme started in 2014 with the idea
of playing music by young, contemporary composers who work in the
Netherlands. Gradually, the 'young' part faded away. The composer
featured in the broadcast gets to decide who will be invited to take
part in the next episode. So after a while, I changed it to 'composers
who work in the Netherlands today'.
I of course did get to decide who the first composer would be, and I
choose my good friend and former fellow student Nikos Ioakeim.
Interesting detail: at this very moment, he is at Schiphol waiting for
this flight to Athens, to move back there permanently.”

Concertzender Live: Utrecht Early Music Festival 2016
This month, you can listen to recordings of several companies at the Utrecht Early Music Festival of 2016 during the Concertzender Live of 13 and 27 April.
In the episode of Thursday 13 April, you can hear Concerto Soave with soprano Maria Cristina Kiehr and artist in residence Olga Pashchenko. On Thursday 27 April, you can listen to a recording of Carnivalesque by Italian company Micrologus.
On
Sunday 28 August 2016, Argentinian soprano Maria Cristina Kiehr and the
instrumentalists of the Concerto Soave ensemble performed a Venetian
repertoire for holy and profane purposes, under the direction of French
harpsichord player Jean-Marc Aymes. Not only the solo motets of
Monteverdi sounded, but also the magnificent Serenata by Barbara Strozzi.
Young,
Russian master pianist Olga Pashchenko gave three concerts during the
festival's main programme and would play daily during the Eventalks.
