Readers, listeners,
“Life
is a lot
like jazz
it’s best when you
improvise.”
George Gershwin (1898 – 1937)
Competition
The
reports of the end of our competion last month have turned out to be
greatly exaggerated. This month there is again a competition and you
can win a CD with string quartets by Felix Mendelssohn if you know the
correct answer to our question.
The questions
last month were: Where and when does the Erik Satie Festival take
place? Which musicians produced the CD that will be presented at the
festival?
The correct answers were: The festival took place on 8 November 2014 in
the Amstelkerk in Amsterdam. The CD that was presented during the
festival was by Martin Grudaj and Erik Le Cornu Huele. The lucky winner is: Ymir Flink. Congratulations!

Utrecht Music 2014
Utrecht has always been a musical city, but
the opening of
the new TivoliVredenburg meant that 2014 was declared the Music
Year in
Utrecht.
The
Concertzender, located in Utrecht, looks back in December at the many
festivals and musical events that took place in Utrecht during this
year of music. Several programmes about music in the city that
were broadcast earlier in the year will be repeated. These include the
programme about the Collegium Musicum Ultrajectinum. Also included are highlights from our new series ‘De
Musyck Kamer’...

CD of the month - ‘Xu Lai’ by Lingling Yu
The CD of the month has been chosen by Pieter de Rooij (see: ‘Introducing...’). He explains the reasons for this choice.
“Chinese
pipa-muziek is almost never heard on Dutch radio or television and only
very rarely performed live in the Netherlands. However it
is worth
listening to and so I am taking this opportunity to bring
this form of classical
Chinese music to your attention. The album
‘Xu Lai’ is a beautiful recording of the pipa
player Lingling Yu that was issued on the Felmay label.”

Review of Acoustic Roots 2014
There
have been 19 editions of ‘Acoustic Roots’ in 2014 and the
makers of the programme look back at the music that
has been broadcast
during the year. In
mid-2014 the Concertzender moved from
the Conclusion building
in the outskirts of
Utrecht to the Ganzenmarkt in the centre of
the city. ‘Acoustic Roots’ moved at the same
time to the 16th century chapel of the Pieters-
kerk, the Pieternel.

Introducing …
Pieter de Rooij, programme maker world music
Pieter
has been working at the Concertzender since 1993 and is a member
of the editorial office of our world music department. “Everything
that can be called world music is featured in my programmes. There were
times that I made two programmes in a month, but I don't achieve those
levels of productivity at the moment. Now I make a new episode of
‘Wereld-
mineralen’ every two months. This programme generally
features new releases in all genres but sometimes there is a special
that focusses on one specific genre. Indian raga music gets extra
attention in my other programme ‘Gharana’, each episode gives a
portrait of a single musician by means of recordings and an interview.
This programme has been dormant for a while, but I intend to start it
again in the new year. I already have enough interesting
interviews for a number of new episodes. Hopefully, I will have the
time to make them soon. I run two social networks about raga:
‘Gharana’ (600 followers) on Facebook en ‘Raga Unlimited’
(900 followers) on Linkedin. Both support the exchange of news and
information.”
