There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats.
(Albert Schweitzer: physician, theologian, philosopher, musician 1875-1965 )
Agree?
Then listen to the Concertzender a couple of times a day with a cat on your lap.
In this newsletter you will read more about the music that you (and the cat) will hear in November.
Competition
This month you can win a cd with choral works from
Richard Strauss, Wagner and Mahler, if you know the correct answer
to our question.
Our
question in October was: 'Which well-known American was sold a vacuum
cleaner by Captain Beefheart?' The correct answer was: Aldous Huxley
(although he was born in England, he emigrated to the United States). The
winners are W. de Haan (Utrecht), W. de Bres (Dordrecht), J. Maas
(Berkel-Enschot), R. Doesburg (Rotterdam) and W. Verbraeken (België).
The cd ‘Selling Hoovers in Mojave’ by
the Rosa Ensemble is on its way
to the winners.
This month's question
The question this month is in three parts: Who arranged the choral
works by Richard Strauss for a 16-part choir? Which choir did he
establish? And who was
his teacher?

New series on the Concertzender: 100 years of Jazz
Does jazz really already exist for 100 years?
Probably
even longer, if you include the earliest developments in blues and
ragtime. But jazz itself, when did that begin? Maybe in 1917, with the
recordings by the Original Dixieland Jass Band? And what is left of
jazz after the ’70s and ’80s? Are there still new developments? A
new series of programmes beginning on 5 November (every Tuesday from
17:00 to 18:00) will answer these and many more questions.

Special offer Vredenburg: Poulenc and the Black Virgin of Rocamadour
Vredenburg,
one of our partners, offers readers of the Concertzender newsletter a
reduction on the price of the tickets for a selected concert each
month. This month's concert is the performance of works from Francis Poulenc by the Radio Filhar-
monisch Orkest and the Groot Omroepkoor conducted by James Gaffigan in Vredenburg Leidsche Rijn. The
Frenchman Poulenc had the reputation of a man that enjoyed life. But
the sudden death of two of his best friends inspired him to write two
moving and emotional choral works: ‘Litanies à la Vierge Noire’ and the
‘Stabat Mater’.

different teams at the Concertzender. We will be inviting colleagues
and musicians from past and present to our "living room" studio

interviews and memorable recordings.
Worth listening to!
The special broadcasts are on Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December from 12:00 to 20:00.
Cd of the month: ‘Melk en Honing’ from the Pauni Trio
This month Karin van den Boogaert (see ‘May I introduce myself...’) has chosen the cd of the month.
Karin: My cd for this month is the new album ‘Melk en Honing’ (Milk and Honey) from the Pauni Trio. They
are three Dutch women who sound as if they come from Bulgaria. They
performed songs from their latest cd in the Acoustic Roots programme
in October. This cd was made possible by crowd-funding and the
Dutch-language songs were inspired by Bulgarian folk-music, songs
from the VARA radio programme ‘Onder
de groene linde’ and their own experiences. Jan Rot and the young
composer
Kay Krijnen also contributed to the cd. The songs sound Bulgarian, but
as my colleague Hans Meerman discovered after three or four of
them: “You can also understand them!”(although this may not be true for
all the readers of this newsletter)
Focus: some recommendations for November
As always, there are many gems to be found in the schedules of the Concertzender for November. Here are some of our recommendations for this month.
Vredenburg Live: Tord Gustavsen Trio
Pianist Tord Gustavsen and his trio are one of the most important
ambassadeurs of Norwegian jazz. The group courageously explores the
unique universe that exists between Scandi-
navian folk music and
cool
jazz. The performance by Gustavsen together with bassist
Mats Eilertsen and drummer Jarie
Vespestad was part of the series ‘ECM artists in concert’ at the
Vredenburg Leeuwenbergh. The recording were made on 17 January 2013.
Broadcast: Tuesday 5 November 19:00 in Vredenburg Live. For more information, refer to the Programme guide

Acoustic Roots
Our guest in Acoustic Roots this month is the
American
singer-songwriter Myshkin (named after the main character in
Dostojevski's novel ‘The Idiot’). Myshkin plays guitar and has a warm
voice, her music is bluesy, folky countrysongs, but also reminiscient of the sound of fado.
Broadcast: Friday 15 November 2013, 21.00-22.00.
May I introduce myself…
Karin van den Boogaert: programme maker Acoustic Roots
Karin
has been working for the Concertzender since October 2012. “I left the
Dutch department of the Wereldomroep in May 2012, saying goodbye with
a spectacular 24-hour broadcast on radio and tv - the last 10
minutes can still be seen on YouTube. I had worked there for more than
20 years and was devoted to them. I started with radio, but also
presented tv-programmes for the satellite channel BVN for 10
years. Although I also made programmes for many other stations
(including Vroege Vogels for the VARA and the Radio 1
Journaal for the NOS) I still treasure my time at the Wereldomroep
the most. I could do everything there and learnt so much.”
