New series on the Concertzender:
100 years of Jazz

Does jazz really already exist for 100 years?

Probably even longer, if you include the earliest developments in blues and ragtime. But jazz itself, when did that begin? Maybe in 1917, with the recordings by the Original Dixieland Jass Band? And what is left of jazz after the ’70's and ’80's? Are there still new developments?
A new series of programmes beginning on 5 November (every Tuesday from 17:00 to 18:00) will answer these and many more questions.

Jazz periods

The series will look at different periods in the development of jazz.

Each period will be explained during interviews with Dutch musicians and the instrument that they play form the focus of the programme.

We have divided the history of jazz into four periods:
1.         Traditional jazz, Old style and Swing ( ‘20, ‘30, ‘40, ‘50)
2.         Bebop, Hardbop and Westcoast (‘40, ‘50, ‘60)
3.         Freebop, Freejazz and Fusion (‘50, ‘60, ‘70, ‘80)
4.         Developments in the last 30 years

There will be a series of programmes about each period. In each series, musicians  will talk about the musicians that influenced them personally and more importantly helped to define the period.

Broadcasts: Tuesday 5, 12, 19 and 26 November, 17:00-18:00.
