Aafje Heynis, born 100 years agoThis month she would have turned 100: Aafje Heynis, one of the Netherlands' greatest opera singers. Many recordings by Aafje Heynis have been preserved. Moreover, CDs featuring her voice are still being released long after her death in 2015. Aafje Heynis was born on May 2 1924 in Krommenie in West Friesland. She enjoyed an international career, but remained firmly rooted in Dutch soil. The Concertzender will celebrate the centenary of her birth with a broadcast in which her contralto voice can again be heard on Dutch radio. Although she became widely known as an oratorio singer, her repertoire was much broader. A selection from this repertoire will be featured in the programme Thou singest ye carol on Sunday May 12th. Listen: Thou singest ye carol, Sunday May 12th, 11:00 - 12:00 CET. |

Introducing our new ‘carefree' programme: SanssouciThe first broadcast of the new programme Sanssouci took place on April 27. The programme is entirely devoted to music from the classical and pre-classical period. The period of interest begins around 1730, when young composers increasingly broke away from the restrictions of Baroque music, and ends about a century later, when Romanticism finally wins the day. Sanssouci was the palace of King Frederick the Great. He was a great music lover and a gifted amateur flutist. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, son of Johann Sebastian and one of the most highly regarded composers of the classical era, worked at his court. But Sanssouci also means 'carefree'. That's the feeling that this music often radiates: infectious cheerfulness that allows you forget all your cares for a few moments. Read more (in Dutch) Listen: Sanssouci, Saturday April 27th, 10:00 - 11:00 CET. |
Thursday May 2Theme: Early Music |
Springtime in musicIn earlier times, man lived much closer to nature than now. Life was largely determined by the changing of the seasons and the rhythms of nature. This was also reflected in art. Depictions of the months and the seasons were very popular in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. We allow ourselves to be guided by spring in the first episode of Documento in May. There were many composers who used spring as their theme during the Romantic period, but during the Baroque and earlier periods people were also inspired by spring, a season that heralded the arrival of new life… Listen: Documento, Thursday May 2nd, 21:00 - 22:00 CET. |
