In the first special anniversary broadcast you will hear the story and music of the first decade of the Concertzender. The theme of Morning Edition is 40: opus 40 works by various composers. In Bach Ad Infinitum two firsts; a Mozartian arrangement on a Bach motet and a new reconstruction of the Saint Mark Passion! InJazz Radio looks ahead and looks back on Transition, the indispensable Utrecht Jazz Festival and Jazz Ahead 2024 in Bremen, Germany. And a message from our recording team that in February was back in full swing at various festivals at home and abroad. |

Anniversary update: the Concertzender has been in existence for forty years this year, and we are celebrating! The first special anniversary broadcast is planned for Monday, March 25th. We have asked three programme makers to put together a two-hour programme. With live music, a look back and forward and, above all, a lot of music! In the first of these special anniversary broadcasts, volunteers from the very beginning will have their say: programme maker Beatrijs Vissers and recording technician Wijnand de Groot discuss the musical landscape with Leo Samama, musicologist and also programme maker at the Concertzender, in the 80s. What prompted you to establish the Concertzender? And what music was important at the time? The Concertzender has been showing a wide variety of music for forty years. The programme makers have been passionate music lovers for all these years and enjoy sharing their knowledge with listeners. What is special is that many of them have been involved with the Concertzender for a long time. We have invited a number of people to recall their memories of the Concertzender in this series of special anniversary broadcasts. Listen: Concertzender 40 years, Monday 25th March, 20:00 PM - 22:00 CET. |

40 years of Concertzender: only Opus 40 in the Morning EditionIn the week of March 11 to 17, the program Morning Edition will be entirely dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Concertzender. In each episode only Opus 40 by different composers is heard. This includes well-known pieces, such as the First Violin Romance by Ludwig van Beethoven, the Horn Trio by Johannes Brahms and the Holberg Suite by Edvard Grieg. But also obscure compositions, such as the Bolero for basset horn and piano by Charles Koch, and the Fantasie for piano no. 1 by Jan van Boom. Some composers' works are not indicated by an opus number, but by a letter combination, such as BWV (Bach), KV (Mozart) or RV (Vivaldi). These compositions are also discussed in the episodes. Listen to the Morning Edition from March 11 to 17 in the morning from 7 to 10 am and be surprised by the diverse compositions with opus number 40! Listen: only Opus 40 in Morning Edition, Monday March 11, 07:00 - 10:00 CET. |

Bach Ad Infinitum: Thomas LeiningerIn Bach Ad Infinitum on Friday, March 1, we're playing a special arrangement of a Bach motet. This is in fact a reconstruction of an orchestral version that Mozart may have written. In 1789 Mozart was visiting Leipzig. The Bach motet Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, BWV 225, was performed especially for him by the Thomas Choir conducted by the then Thomaskantor Doles. Mozart was so impressed by what he heard that he asked for a copy of the score, stating that it was missing an orchestral accompaniment, which he was going to write for it. It is unknown whether Mozart ever did this. On the occasion of 300 years of Bach in Leipzig, the Bach Archives in Leipzig commissioned the harpsichordist Thomas Leininger to compose the orchestral part that Mozart was to write. It was performed as part of the opening concert of the Bachfest 2023. This concert was broadcast live on various cultural channels in Germany. When we came across this arrangement of BWV 225, we wanted to broadcast it. Bach Ad Infinitum, together with Thomas Leininger, finally managed to obtain permission from the Bach Archive, the Thomanerchores and the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig to broadcast this concert exclusively again. We have heard that Thomas Leininger and all the musicians involved think this is just as fantastic as we do! The Bach Archive calls the work “Geistliche Sinfonie Singet dem Herrn einneues Lied für Soli, Doppelchor und Orchester auf Basis der Motette von Johann Sebastian Bach”. Listen: Bach Ad Infinitum, Friday March 1, 13:00 - 14:00 CET. Listen: Bach Ad Infinitum, Friday March 8, 13:00 - 14:00 CET. |

The wayward Prokofiev and Northern LightsIn addition to paying attention to new programmes, we also produce popular and much-listened to long-running series. This month we pay extra attention to two of them. The wayward Prokofiev and Northern Lights. They are both programmes by Luc Nijs. Every two weeks, The wayward Prokofiev focuses for an hour on the life and work of the Russian 20th century composer Sergei Prokofiev, undoubtedly one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century. Listen:The wayward Prokofiev, Tuesday March 5, 22:00 - 23:00 CET. In Northern Lights, every two weeks an hour of attention solely on Scandinavian and Baltic music. There are no limits to our search from old and new to known and less known. We also like to include the entire spectrum from classical music to crossovers. Listen: Northern Lights, March 12, 22:00 - 23:00 CET. |
