The Concertzender in July: jazz and world music in abundance

The unusual protest recently on 27th June, in which jazz musicians in The Hague and Hilversum protested against the “structural lack of jazz and world music at the NPO”, once again makes it clear what role the Concertzender plays within the Dutch media landscape and how important it is to bring this to the attention of listeners.

jazz in overvloed bij de ConcertzenderAccording to State Secretary for Culture & Media Gunay Uslu, the protests stem from “the feeling that there is not enough jazz and world music to be heard in the musical landscape in the Netherlands.” Has our Secretary of State ever heard of the Concertzender?

Anyway, lots of beautiful stuff in July on the Concertzender! Take the new programme Ratatouille, every work day from 16:00 to 17:00 CET with a pleasant mix of classical, jazz and world music and everything in between. Also Co de Kloet who was present at INJAZZ 2023 and reports on it in a number of theme broadcasts, or Hannes Minnaar in Concertzender Live, with a number of modern works from native soil.

In Organ Work we travel to the German Neuenfelde where famous organ builder Arp Schnitger (also called the Stradivarius of organ builders), lived, worked and eventually died. In The great American Songbook we cover another celebrity: Henry Mancini, best known for the music theme from the film The Pink Panther.

Dutch Glory at November Music in Concertzender Live

On Monday 3rd July, we're broadcasting the seventh broadcast of Concertzender Live with exclusive recordings of the Festival November Music edition 2022. The broadcast is entirely devoted to two concerts in the WillemTwee Toonzaal.

Hannes MinnaarOn Thursday 10th November, Dutch pianist Hannes Minnaar made his November Music debut. The Dutch composer Rob Zuidam wrote five nocturnes in 2020 under the collective title NOX especially for him. The fourth part is very special: Farewell to Reinbert on Zorgvlied is a memorial for conductor, pianist and composer Reinbert de Leeuw, who passed away in February 2020.

In addition the Dudok Quartet plays two recent works by Dutch composers: Introduction and Dances for String Quartet by Theo Loevendie and String Quartet No. 4 What Remains by festival composer Joey Roukens. To complete the programme, the 2nd String Quartet by the Hungarian composer György Ligeti .

There are many more November Music recordings available on the Concertzender: about 350 hours of music in almost 200 broadcasts with recordings from November 2000. All can be found via the search function on our website, but also listened to non-stop via the theme channel November Music.

Listen: Concertzender Live, Monday July 3, 20:00 - 22:00 CET.

New theme channel Chansons

The Concertzender is launching a new theme channel dedicated to the French chanson. The new channel offers a non-stop selection from the programmes made by Sylvester Hoogmoed that are broadcast every Saturday afternoon at 13:00 CET.

j'aime chansonsThe Tour de France is approaching again and this channel offers you a great opportunity to get into the mood.

Chansons from every period
The programmes about chansons made by Sylvester Hoogmoed differ from other internet channels and the Spotify lists dedicated to this genre because they are not limited to a single time period. A recording by Aristide Bruant from the turn of the last century transitions seamlessly into the latest download success of 'slameur' Grand Corps Malade. A pre-war hit by Maurice Chevalier is linked 'sans problème' to a new recording by Zaz.

Hoogmoed regularly features the timeless repertoire of the greats such as Trenet, Brassens, Brel, Béart, Barbara, Ferré, Aznavour, Gainsbourg, Renaud and Cabrel. In addition, he also plays a lot of unknown work from the past hundred years that is rarely heard on the radio, even in France. The many young Dutch artists who have devoted themselves to chanson in recent years are not forgotten either. They have often taken part in the Concours de la Chanson, and the Concertzender broadcast the final of this competition for decades.

Organ Work in Neuenfelde

Schnitger_orge NeuenfeldeOn Thursday 13th July, the organ programme Organ Work goes to the German town of Neuenfelde, just as in June. We hear the beautiful Schnitger organ from 1688 which enriches this town. Neuenfelde is also the place where the organ builder Arp Schnitger worked, built an organ in the St. Pankratius-Kirche and was eventually buried.

Hilger Kespohl, the current organist of the church, plays the organ with works by Johann Adam Reincken. This originally Dutch organist/composer became one of the greatest baroque organ composers in Germany. You will hear, among other things, the beautiful choral fantasy based on the song An Wasserflüssen Babylon.

In the June broadcast we also played the organ in Neuenfelde, then with works by Heinrich Scheidemann. The programme Organ Work is about authentic music on historic organs. At the moment we're covering unknown organs in northern Germany. Earlier in the series we covered unknown organs in Groningen.

Listen: Organ Work, Thursday July 13, 20:00 - 21:00 CET / repeat broadcast Tuesday July 25, 11:00 - 12:00 CET. Compiled by Hans Beek.

Henry ManciniThe Great American Songbook: the music of Henry Mancini

Enrico Nicolas Mancini was born in 1924 in Ohio USA and was the son of Italian immigrants. He is considered one of the most important composers of music for film and TV series; examples include Breakfast at Tiffany's, Peter Gunn and The Pink Panther.

Many of his songs ended up in The Great American Songbook and his compositions are also very popular with jazz instrumentalists.

Buddy - ‘King of the One-Nighter Circuit’ - and Ella Johnson

Buddy en Ella JohnsonIt is Monday, March 16, 1981. At the appointed time, between two and two thirty, I am standing in the lobby of 672 St. Nicholas Avenue in Harlem. This is where Ella Johnson lives, one of my favorite singers.

Inside it is dark and sparsely furnished. On the dresser is a cover of an EP. That's all that reminds her of the time when she toured and recorded with the orchestra of her brother, the pianist and composer Buddy Johnson. Buddy was called the 'King of the One-Nighter Circuit' by concert organizers and ballroom owners. His big band was the most popular with black audiences in the South during the 1940s. Forget Lionel Hampton, forget Count Basie, forget Erskine Hawkins.

Our programme The Big Sound on July 22 features a tribute to the Buddy Johnson Orchestra performed by the Planet D Nonet, a group from Detroit led by drummer R.J. Spangler.

Nello Allocca

in memoryWe recently received the sad news that our programme maker Nello Allocca had passed away. Nello was the creator of the Disco Volante programme in which he highlighted the richness of Italian music.

With great enthusiasm and expertise, he came up with varied and special Italian music every month, from folk and tarantella to obscure prog rock and avant-garde from the 1970s.

At the end of last year, Nello was forced to stop his programme for personal reasons. Now the curtain has finally fallen for him. We will miss this amiable and special programme maker.

RoadburnRoadburn: Redefining heaviness

On Wednesday 12 July our programme Theme will be looking back at Roadburn 2023. The Tilburg Roadburn festival advertises itself every year with the striking words 'Redefining Heaviness'. These words have never been more applicable to the festival than in 2023.

Roadburn showed itself to have an exceptional antenna for new, undiscovered musical talent. Anyone who thinks that heavy music is only for men with beards and growling guitars will be disappointed.

We pay extra attention to artists who made their first appearance this year. You can listen to Nicole Dollanganger, Schnellertollermeier, Oiseaux-Tempête and Bell Witch, heavy music in all the colors of the rainbow.

Listen: Theme, Wednesday July 12, 20:00 - 22:00 CET.
