CD of the month: Reinhold Friedl & Franck Vigroux; Tobel

Label: La Muse en Circuit / ALM 005

cd van de maandOur new producer Armeno Alberts (see: Introducing...) has chosen this month's CD.

The most recent CD on the label La Muse en Circuit, from the studio for electroacoustic music in Paris that was establishedby Luc Ferrari, was issued in February.

This is the fifth album on the label and includes the track 'TOBEL', the studio version of a live performance by Reinhold Friedl and Franck Vigroux, recorded during the Bruits Blancs #3 festival (Paris – Anis Gras, May 2013).

Reinhold Friedl, born in 1964, is a Berlin composer, pianist and sound-artist. He has become known especially as the founder and artistic director of Zeitkratzer, the awkward Berlin ensemble for contemporary music.
Friedl has played together with a number of celebrities including Lee Ranaldo, Merzbow and Phill Niblock. His own (solo) performances mainly involve sounds coming from the interior of the piano.

Kirsty McGee in Acoustic Roots

The English singer-songwriter Kirsty McGee can be heard in Acoustic Roots on Kirsty McGeeFriday18 July from 21.00 to 22.00.

For 20 years Kirsty McGee has been following
her personal musical path. She has a great talent for writing subtle songs, often personal and introvert, which are both political and narrative. With her soft, yet insistent voice, she captivates her public, while she accompanies herself on guitar.

Her music went through a change, going from folk to ’hobopop’: her name for the combination of folk, jazz, rockabilly, and oldtime Americana that she has now played for years.

In the meantime she has produced six albums
for BBC Radio 2, all under her own label Hobopop Recordings. She has been nominated twice for BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and she is the winner of the IMA award for the best Live Album in 2011. So she can no longer be considered to be unknown in her own country.

Music from the archives of the Collegium Musicum Ultrajectinum

Two new episodes of Documento on July 7 and July 21 look at the Collegium Musicum Ultrajectinum, the music college of the city of Utrecht. These programmes have been produced as part of the Utrecht Music Year 2014, a year that also includes the opening of the new TivoliVredenburg.Collegium Musicum Ultrajectinum

In 1631 eleven prominent citizens of Utrecht established a society to make music together. This society played an important role in the musical life of the city until 1959.

These two programmes look at the history of
the society in the 17th and 18th centuries using their archives of sheet music. These archives contain a complete catalogue of all the sheet music that they held including compositions by Thomas Simpson, John Jenkins, Claude Lejeune, Marco Uccellini, Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello and Francesco Geminiani. A collection of opera overtures by George Frideric Handel were also discovered in the archives.

Our new programme maker Jacques Hendrickx will show us around the archives.

Broadcasts:
Part 1: Monday 7 July, 19.00 - 20.00
Part 2: Monday 21 July, 19.00 - 20.00

Introducing…

Armeno Alberts: presenter/producer

This month Armeno Alberts is in the limelight. He is going to start in September,
but we would like to introduce him to you now.

Armeno AlbertsCafé Sonore

“From September 2014 I will produce and present the programme Café Sonore once a month. Basically the programme will be broad-
cast on Wednesday evenings, in any case from 23.00 to midnight, but maybe it will become a 2 hour-block, from 22.00 to midnight. We are still
in negotiations about that.
From September 2012 to December 2013, Café Sonore was the last remaining structual radio programme from the Public Broadcaster, the VPRO (first on Radio 4, then on Radio 5 and finally ending up on Radio 6). From January
2014 onwards this programme (together with many other programmes) was cut back by
VPRO. This was the result of Cabinet Rutte l, which wants to save 200 million on the media budget. And, not unimportantly …, when the programme disappeared I lost my job as well”

Content

“At the VPRO, Café Sonore was the radio platform for the 'Ras Acustica', an 'umbrella phrase’ for a number of 'vulnerable' genres within contemporary music, i.e. acousmatic music, sound art, radiophonics, experimental impro, etc. However, within the Concertzender Café Sonore is not
the only programme that covers such music genres, which are a little unknown.
I will therefore change the direction of Café Sonore somewhat under the banner
of the Concertzender. Currently I am still in discussion with those directly involved
in order to get everything agreed in the best possible way.”
