Acoustic Roots with Parne Gadje
On
17 January 2014 (21:00 – 22:00) Acoustic Roots welcomes the first
guests of the new year to our living-room studio in the Conclusion
building in Utrecht: the gypsy ensemble Parne Gadje.
Parne Gadje has five members and makes innovative and driving music, full of surprising improvisations. The
group makes use of exciting instruments such as the magical
Armenian duduk and self-made string instruments including a
bicycle tyre bass.
Breathtaking travels
Recently Parne Gadje brought
out a new CD:
‘Po Drom’ ('On the road'). On this CD they take us on a
breathtaking journey around the Black Sea. The group's music originates
from Afghanistan, Macedonia, Greece, Hungary and Anatolia and has
tight rhythms, transcendental grooves en eastern scales. It
sometimes sounds a bit like the Bosphorus blues.

CD of the month: Road Tapes – Frank Zappa
Paul Lemmens (see ‘Introducing...’) chose the CD of the month.
He has the following to say about his choice: “It
won't be much of a surprise that I have chosen a CD by Frank Zappa
after you have read all about my adoration for him. This was
brought out recently and is the second part of the 'Road Tapes' series
that is being issued by the Zappa Family Trust: ‘Venue #2 – Finlandia
Hall- Helsinki; 23, 24 August 1973’ is a masterpiece. Fast, witty,
to the point, excellent. Full of fine compositions, but also
with an exceptional guitar solo from Zappa during ‘Big Swifty’. A
perfect solo for the winter months, it is so hot it will melt the snow.
The band includes the violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and George Duke, who
unfortunately died last year, on keyboards. The Underwood family is
also present: percussionist Ruth and multi-
instrumentalist Ian. It
is one of the better Zappa bands and one of the
better Zappa concerts. The Finns who were there at the time
were very fortunate!
And so are we now, more than 40 years later.”

from the 16th century, the composers Orlandus Lassus and Philippe
de Monte, in the programme ‘Lassus & De Monte: Ein Leben in

Let Me Dwell’.

Introducing…
Paul Lemmens: programme maker Popart & Electronic music
“I
have been involved with the Concertzender since the summer
of 2013. A friend
of mine who already worked here, Bert Broere,
set things in motion. One evening
he casually asked if working for
the Concert-
zender might be something for me. I thought it might be and
he passed that on to someone in the organisation. I was called a short
time later by Hessel Veldman, invited for an interview and was soon at
work. Initially my involvement concerned electronic music (for more
details see this link). But then a vacancy became available
in Popart and I started doing that
as well. This gave me the opportunity to play something other than
carols on Christmas day. So this year it was possible to listen to
Can while wrestling with the turkey. It is fun to prepare a programme
like that. I look for unusual and interesting music in my own
collection and write (hopefully) a similarly unusual and interesting
text to accompany it.
If Hessel (the 'boss') agrees, the programme is
broadcast. It doesn't seem much, but if you want to do it well, it
takes quite a lot of time. You also listen to your own cds in new and different ways, which I also enjoy.”
