Concertzender news letter september '12

Dear reader,

This month sees the introduction of a new feature: ‘Concertzender CD of the Month’. This time the editors of the classical music section picked a CD

The early music editors have published a great many reviews of the Festival Oude Muziek on their  blog and have recorded concerts at this early music festival. We will get to this later.

There is also an interesting prize question, offering you the opportunity to win a DVD about a classical composer, as well as the score of  one of his works.

In this newsletter you get to meet Kees Hogenbirk, a passionate film music specialist.

We also like to promote the Concertzender. You can read how you can help us without any effort at all.

And last but not least: Vredenburg offers a discount on 50 concert tickets: over 15%! Read how you may obtain them.

We wish you happy reading.

Concertzender CD of the Month: ‘Le compositeur et ses interprètes’ by Debussy

This month sees the introduction of a new Concertzender feature: ‘Concertzender CD of the Month’. The classical music editors kick off the seridebussyes.

Recently AEON released a special Debussy album: ‘Le compositeur et ses interprètes’.

Following the exhibition ‘Debussy, la musique et les arts’ at the Paris Musée d’Orsay curator Jean-Michel Nectoux compiled this Debussy album. The CD presents singers, pianists and conductors from the first half of the 20th century performing the works of Debussy for the first time. The album opens with a recording by Debussyhimself. He accompanies the singer Mary Garden at the piano for ‘Mes longs cheveux’.

Introducing…
Kees Hogenbirk – film music specialist

“I specialize in film music: ‘The Sound of Movies’. For the Concertzender I compile the programs ‘Jazz in de Film’ and ‘Ongehoorde Scores’ (Unheard Scores).”

“Having finished my studies in Italy, I moved to Amsterdam in 1990. Here I became a professional film journalist, through the Stichting Cinemusica (the Dutch Center for Film Music). As an art history student I started writing for the magazine ‘Score’, published by the aforementioned institute. ‘Score’ is the world’s oldest magazine on this subject.

This editor’s job offered me a great opportunity to interview Willem Breuker for the national newspaper ‘de Volkskrant’, prepare the television interview talkshow host Adriaan van Dis had with composer Georges Delerue, live at the Filmfestival Rotterdam, and make a promo film about the mechanics of film music for the TV program ‘NOS Sprekershoek’. I also wrote articles for the film magazine ‘Skoop.”

Learn young…
“From my earliest youth I have been fascinated by the use of sound in combination with images.  In my high school days I got to see the great Hollywood films on German TV. I bought my first soundtrack LP with my pocket money: ‘Jaws’ by John Williams, not knowing that it would become a modern classic in this specific music genre. I started collecting soundtracks, made recordings in the cinema with my cassette recorder to analyze the scores at home, and ordered second-hand LPs in the States that are now extremely valuable.”

My way to the Concertzender
“In 1990 I started writing for the film magazine ‘de Filmkrant’ about the technique and backgrounds of this unusual branch of modern music: this subservient genre that has such a great, but imperceptible effect on the audience. For the Amsterdam Radio AFM I gave a weekly course for Teleac in film interpretation: ‘Kijken met je Oren’ (Watching with Your Ears). I commented on music fragments of recent films by telling the listeners what was going on in that particular scene.

When the program was discontinued along with the Teleac station, I was tipped off that the Concertzender was always on the lookout for specialized program makers. I compiled my first episode of ‘Jazz in de Film’ in October 1995. The series is still running. At the moment I produce three programs per month on Saturday nights.”

Museum-like collection
“For years I have been collecting material for ‘Jazz in de Film’ and ‘Ongehoorde Scores,’ and new film music series. I scour all kinds of markets, fairs, and second-hand record stores in every city or country I visit. In this way I have assembled a museum-like collection. I like to have examples of the works of all major film composers in my collection. Maintaining my archive is one of my favorite pastimes.”

My mission
“Film music is a niche in contemporary music, especially in the Netherlands. In neighboring countries there are more specialized record stores and more investments are made in music for films. Maybe the Dutch don’t see film as a serious form of art – and film music as a derived artistic expression even less so.  It makes me all the more passionate in showing how well this music is composed.”

“I’m an art and film journalist, but my programs for the Concertzender are the most appropriate medium for me. I wouldn’t mind a few extra hours if they are up for grabs.”
