Message from Sem de Jongh, director Concertzender
We start this year with two new coordinators: Alexander Kraft van Ermel for Classical Music and Alexander Kostas for Contemporary Music. We're currently also developing a new app. A major challenge due to our complex technical structure and the enormous amount of music that we make available online. You'll read all about it in this newsletter when the app goes live. This year we will be continuing with our successful Pocket Concerts, which feature top Dutch jazz musicians performing in our studio. At the same time our programme developers are always coming up with new ideas. Mozart lovers, for example, can look forward to a whole year of Mozart's music in the programme Sanssouci, every Saturday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 CET. There's too much more to mention here, from jazz to classical, from world music to opera, from baroque to improv. A good reason to tune in to our unique radio station as often as possible in the coming year! |

Oratorio for New Year’s DayNew Year's Day is a festive occasion for which much music has been composed. In Missa Etcetera we present two eighteenth-century works to commemorate this day.
The programme also features a cantata by Gottfried August Homilius. He was Kantor of the Kreuzschule, which belonged to the Kreuzkirche. During the Seven Years' War, it was destroyed by Prussian troops. In 1756, the year the war began, he composed a cantata for New Year's Day. This war was probably the reason for including the chorale Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich in the opening chorus. Listen: Missa Etcetera, Thursday 1 January, 22:00 - 23:00 CET. |

Music from the newly independent Mali
They also looked back at previous editions of the annual Africa Festival in Hertme, Overijssel and looked forward to the edition planned for 2026. At the beginning of the new year, you can listen to an episode of the programme made by Kees Schuil, featuring music from Mali that was made shortly after its independence in 1960. You'll hear music by multi-instrumentalist Kélétigui Diabaté and groups formed by the government of Mali at that time, including the Ensemble Instrumental National Du Mali and regional orchestras such as the Orchestre Régional de Sikasso and Orchestre Régional De Kayès. Listen: Mariama, Friday 2 January, 20:00 - 21:00 CET. |

Pianist and old-style pioneer Roefie HuetigBehind the Dikes focuses on Roefie Huetig, one of the pioneers of old-style jazz in the Netherlands. For many years, he was the pianist of the Down Town Jazz Band, the orchestra he founded in 1949.
The orchestra's lineup changed constantly over the years; Roefie was the only constant, and trumpeter Karel Rijper also played with the band until its fortieth anniversary. In 2010, after 61 years, the orchestra came to an end. This longevity is largely due to the efforts of Roefie Huetig, who kept the band afloat after its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s. A growing music archiveOur team of recording engineers has been busy this past year, recording on a total of 160 occasions. We've recorded many classical, jazz, and world music concerts. Unfortunately, we've recorded fewer early music concerts, as the Early Music Festival in Utrecht has started recording and broadcasting its own material. TivoliVredenburg does, however, still provide us with recordings of various performances they make themselves. You can hear these, and many of our own recordings, during the Concertzender Live programme, broadcast daily between 14:00 and 16:00 CET. We'll also post all approved recordings on the website as soon as possible. They can be found under Concerts in the menu.
Concerts are already on our schedule for the new year. Here's to a successful year of recordings in 2026! All broadcasts of Concertzender Live Classical can be found here. All broadcasts of Concertzender Live Contemporary can be found here. All broadcasts of Concertzender Live World can be found here. photo: recording technician Dirk Winkel |

The Concertzender in January: oratorio for New Year's day, Malinese music, Dutch Cassette Culture and much more
Dear newsletter reader, I personally want to wish you a very happy new year, full of beautiful music! We certainly have a lot to sing about here at the Concertzender, as you'll notice.
The first work is an oratorio by Georg Gebel. After working in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland) and Dresden, he was attached to the court in Rudolstadt from 1747 until his death in 1753. There he composed an oratorio for New Year's Day 1748.
The Concertzender's programme Mariama has for many years been the go-to destination for African music. Last year, programme creators Kees Schuil and Rob Lokin delved into their extensive collections of music from African countries.
For many years, it was one of the leading orchestras in the Netherlands. Down Town played traditional jazz with an emphasis on collective improvisation.
Our recording engineers are based throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. This way, we try to capture special performances throughout the Low Countries. The Concertzender's ever-growing music archive is important for venues and musicians. And a treasure trove for you, the music lover!
Ovid's Metamorphoses have been an endless source of inspiration for literature and visual art since antiquity. Over the centuries, Ovid's stories came to life in many forms, including marble and music. Twentieth-century music also includes numerous references.
American Roots and Reggae
The series will explore the era when the compact cassette entered the music industry as a new medium.
