The Concertzender in July: revival of cassette tapes, mixed genres and the first Pocket Concert

PocketConcerts logoOld and new music, genres that mix: it's all possible this month. A revival of cassette tapes, enjoying Duke Ellington's brilliant jazz and marveling at modern music - think of the elusive Lithuanian composer Baltakas or the jazz-classical mix of the Russian Kapustin.

And not to forget surprising live music videos: this month the first Pocket Concert can finally be heard and seen.

We wish you a wonderfully relaxing summer!

Ode to the cassette tape

ode aan het cassettebandjeThe cassette tape was a Dutch invention and offered musicians and listeners real creative freedom for the first time. The cassette culture meant a democratization of music production and distribution: the beginning of a vibrant DIY culture.

In the broadcast of the Free Radicals on Sunday 29 June, attention was paid to the recently released LP: Willem de Ridder & the Radio Art Foundation present “Radiola” by Dead Mind Records. But also attention to contemporary music cassette releases, because in 2025 we see a renewed interest in this sound carrier: the music cassette lives!

Vykintas BaltakasThe musical Sheherazade from Lithuania: Vykintas Baltakas

The Lithuanian composer Vykintas Baltakas is praised as a musical master storyteller. His works arise from a kind of musical 'primordial soup', formless and open, from which he sculpts meaningful musical stories.

For example, in Lift to Dubai he captured city life in sound: with sounds from metro stations to construction sites, he built a work for ensemble and electronics. In Ouroboros he was inspired by the age-old symbol of a snake eating its own tail – a metaphor for cycles and eternal renewal. From this he created cyclical soundscapes for soprano and electronics . In the Northern Lights episode of July 1st, you will hear how Baltakas lets music speak like a story.

Listen: Northern Lights, Tuesday July 1st, 22:00 - 23:00 CET.

Here they are! Pocket Concerts

The first Pocket Concert Videos will be published at the beginning of July, intimate videos of short concerts that we record at the World of Jazz and the Concertzender editorial office. The line-ups are small and can consist of both emerging talent and well-known names from the Dutch Jazz and Global scene.

Subscribe now to the Pocket Concerts YouTube channel, so you don't have to miss a concert.

Anton Goudsmit en Jasper SomsenThe first concert that we are going to publish is by the duo Anton Goudsmit / Jasper Somsen. Guitarist, composer and Boy Edgar prize winner Anton Goudsmit has been a creative force in the Dutch jazz scene and far beyond for about 30 years, who takes you into his world of passion and dedication with his energetic playing. You may know him from bands such as New Cool Collective, the Ploctones or Ton Petit. Jasper Somsen is perhaps the most recorded bassist in Europe of the last decade. He uses his expressive style not only in jazz, but also in crossovers to classical, global, pop and film music.

The collaboration between these two Dutch heavyweights of jazz dates back to 1994, when they played together in the band of trumpeter Eric Vloeimans. As a duo, their collaboration began in 2014. A collaboration that resulted in the recording of the CD Jasper Somsen invites Anton Goudsmit Live! in 2025. We feel very honored to receive these real jazz cats at the editorial office of World of Jazz for the very first Pocket Concert! Enjoy!

Modern classical with blue notes

blue notesIn the latest episode of our programme Harmonious you can hear how composers in the twentieth century were inspired by jazz.

From the rhythmic energy of George Gershwin, who composed his Cuban Overture after a stay in Havana, to the sparkling Piano Concerto in G major by Maurice Ravel, in which jazz subtly colours the classical structure. And then there is the Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin, who combines jazz and classical as a virtuoso. The score of his Fifth Piano Concerto is fully written out, but the work sounds like spontaneous jazz.

Listen: Harmonious, Sunday July 6th, 16:00 - 17:00 CET.

A trilogy about the Duke’s Singers from the Duke Ellington Band

Adelaide HallThere have been few leaders of jazz orchestras who worked with vocalists as much and as often as Duke Ellington. Over the course of his long career, there have been more than 50 of them.

Often, a vocalist remained his ‘Canary’, as he called his female vocalists, for several years. His collaboration with Ella Fitzgerald is well-known, and in 1957 resulted in the beautiful album Ella Fitzgerald sings the Ellington Songbook. However, there are so many memorable recordings with other singers, such as Ivie Andersen and Adelaide Hall, that we have made three episodes to include them all.

The first was broadcast on June 14, you can listen to it here. Episodes 2 and 3 are broadcast on 12 July and 9 August.

Do you want to hear more Duke Ellington? Then listen to our programme Duke Ellington. This programme has been made by Louis Tavecchio and now includes more than 200 episodes with music by this jazz legend.

Listen: Vocal Jazz, Saturday July 12th, 18:00 – 19:00 CET.
