The Concertzender in April: plenty spring and musical abundance

editorialYes, spring is here! And at the Concertzender there is plenty of choice: leave those filled eggs and indulge in the musical abundance this month.

There is a lot of attention for Easter of course, with no less than two alternative Passions. In addition, we do not want to forget Bach; special attention for the passions in Bach ad Infinitum and in the podcast Bach & Co.

But not only classical music fans can indulge themselves, because there is also an experimental Crosslinks Easter broadcast!

Do you enjoy live music? Then be sure to read about our concert recordings, with a fantastic new project of small, intimate performances in our studio: Pocket Concerts. Enjoy listening!

In the Netherlands, Bach's St. Matthew Passion is once again being played everywhere, but at Concertzender we like to look beyond the standard repertoire. That is why we are playing the Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi by the Polish composer Józef Elsner in Sanssouci on 5th April.

A Latin St. Matthew Passion in the best Catholic tradition. The work dates from 1837, but the music draws heavily on the Viennese classics. Haydn lovers can indulge themselves with the powerful choruses, the emotional arias and the orchestra which at decisive moments says what cannot be said in words.

Listen: Sanssouci, Saturdayday 5th April, 10:00 - 11:00 CET.

Discover the new Pocket Concerts

The Pocket Concerts are short, intimate concerts by Dutch jazz and world musicians. It is a joint initiative of World of Jazz, inJazz Radio & New Music Now.

Pocket ConcertsThe recordings – both sound and image – take place in the radio studio of the Concertzender. In 2025, 20 concerts will be recorded here by small, often unexpected ensembles of both emerging and established artists. You can watch the videos on YouTube and the sites and apps of the three partners. The performances are also part of the program inJazz Radio, which can be heard weekly on the Concertzender and World of Jazz.

With these compact quality productions, the initiators want to bring music to a wide audience in an accessible and inspiring way. "With Pocket Concerts, we want to create an intimate atmosphere, as if you are sitting in the front row at a unique performance," according to the organizers. The first recordings included Jasper Somsen (double bass) & Anton Goudsmit (guitar); Here is a sneak preview.

Listen: inJazz Radio, broadcast March 22nd.

Demantius's St. John Passion

Ensemble PolyharmoniqueIn Missa etcetera this month we will not be listening to the well-known work by Bach, which is so often heard during the Passion season, but to a St. John Passion that was written 100 years earlier by the German composer Christoph Demantius.

No soloists and no orchestra, no recitatives, arias and chorales. Demantius confined himself to the text as it is in the Gospel of John, without additions. It is a so-called 'motet passion', which means that the text is completely set in polyphony. The words of people in the story, such as Jesus, Pilate and Peter, are also polyphonic and are therefore not sung by soloists, as in Bach's work.

The German Ensemble Polyharmonique recorded the work, together with the work Weissagung des Leiden und Sterben Jesu Christi. Both can be heard on Thursday 3rd April at the Concertzender

Listen: Missa etcetera, Thursday 3rd April, 22:00 – 23:00 CET.

Special Passions

We are back in the 40 days of Lent, the quiet time, in which cantatas were not allowed to be performed in church. Johann Sebastian Bach therefore had his hands free to compose the St. John Passion.

Markus PassionIn the coming weeks, the episodes of Bach ad Infinitum will focus on the Passions. First up, the Markus Passion by composer and musicologist Nikolaus Matthes from Basel.

Last year, we already had a conversation with him in our podcast Bach & Co, in which he talks about his new Markus Passion, based on the original text by Picander (pseudonym of Christian Friedrich Henrici). He used Bach's idiom and chose a line-up of experienced Bach musicians.

Because we find this work so special, we are broadcasting it again in three episodes of Bach ad Infinitum, with the last part on Monday, April 7th. If you would also like to hear our conversation with Nikolaus in Bach & Co, listen part 1 and part 2.

Listen: Bach ad Infinitum, Monday 7th April, 13:00 - 14:00 CET.

Boy Edgar: half a century of Dutch jazz history

Boy EdgarIn Jazz Behind the Dikes, we pay attention to Boy Edgar (1915-1980), founder of Boy's Big Band. He led a double life: he was a doctor of medicine and also a trumpet player, pianist, arranger and above all a charismatic orchestra leader.

In 1960 he founded Boy's Big Band, a professional orchestra filled with the crème de la crème of Dutch jazz. Star soloist was alto saxophonist Piet Noordijk. BBB regularly worked with American soloists: Eric Dolphy, Ben Webster, Johnny Griffin, Oliver Nelson. In 1965 the album Now's the Time! was released and a year later Finch Eye. In 1964 Edgar received the Wessel Ilcken Prize. That prize was renamed the Boy Edgar Prize in 1980.

In the broadcast of April 5th you will hear pieces from Finch Eye, and from the CD Return: Live Recordings 1965-1966. If you want to know more, be sure to read the biography Boy Edgar: the double life of an all-rounder, written by Marie-Claire Melzer & Marieke Klomp.

Trio Los PanchosTravel back in time with Trío Los Panchos

Trío Los Panchos, best known for their romantic Bolero, existed for 50 years. Their Mexican music was popular over the whole world, but especially in South America.

The Concertzender has previously featured the trio, but in the coming months we will broadcast a new three-part series that is dedicated to their music. This time we go back to the basis, the first seven years of the trio, 1944-1950. The music from this earliest period is hardly known in the Netherlands, because the trio only broke through there after these early years.

The series is compiled by world-music fan, collector and expert Henk Braaksma.

Listen: Tangos Despreciados, Friday 18th April, 19:00 - 20:00 CET.

A new spring, a familiar sound

lenteThe seasons are a constant source of inspiration for poets and composers. Sometimes in a composition featuring all the seasons and sometimes focusing on just one of them. An Early Evening Stroll on April 15 is dedicated to spring.

With six well-known (and sometimes lesser-known) works, we will show how spring took shape in the music of Wolfgang Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, Josef Suk, Jean Sibelius and Darius Milhaud. We can’t wait for spring to arrive!

Listen: An Early Evening Stroll, Tuesday 15th April, 19:00 - 20:00 CET.
