Discover how the spirit of the times resonates in a piece of music
The work of composers is usually not isolated, but also bears the traces of life in a certain time and under certain circumstances. The new monthly programme Time Signal, which is broadcast every first Tuesday of the month, is about this interaction between music and society, about the political context in which many important compositions were created. Composers were, besides being gifted and sometimes even brilliant, also simply children of their time and marked by certain life circumstances. Poverty, wealth, revolutions, social conventions: how does this resonate in their music? The first broadcast is dedicated to the Enlightenment and its musical reflection. The compiler of the programme, Paul Brill, is a journalist and worked for the Volkskrant for a long time, including as a correspondent in the United States and deputy editor-in-chief. But he also comes from a musical family. His father Samuel Brill was a solo cellist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and a teacher at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Paul Brill made the documentary De lijst van Mengelberg with director Jaap van Eyck about the fate of his father and other Jewish musicians during the war. Hardbop drummer Eric InekeJazz Behind the Dikes dedicates 2 episodes to the career of hard bop drummer Eric Ineke. The first episode on Saturday 1 February focuses on recordings from the first 35 years of Ineke's career.
After 30 years in the business, Ineke started leading his own group in 2006: The Eric Ineke JazzXpress. This formation is still very much alive and internationally successful today. The CD Swing Street - The Eric Ineke JazzXpress feat. Tineke Postma was recently released, with the music of alto saxophonist/composer/bandleader Julian ‘Cannonball’ Adderley as its theme. He has been making his own monthly program for the Concertzender for many years: House of Hard Bop. Listen now to his own music in Behind the Dikes. New coordinator for contemporary musicOn 1st January, our New Music department got a new coordinator: Heleen de Groot. And that is good news, because Heleen comes from a family full of musical talents.
In the archives of the Concertzender we have work by both her eldest brother Rokus de Groot (1947) and her youngest brother Jan Rokus van Roosendael (1960-2005), both influential composers. We also find recordings of the work of her sister-in-law Sinta Wullur (1958), a pioneer in the field of modern gamelan music. In the broadcast of Contemporary Music on Wednesday 15 January, you can listen to a selection of these composers from our archive. Heleen is looking forward to introducing listeners to new musical worlds. An example is the broadcast of Contemporary Music on 5 February, which features varied work by contemporary Australian composers. “I was unfamiliar with this world of music and listened to the pieces with great pleasure. And this program is just a foretaste. In the coming months, Australian music will gradually be further explored.” Listen: Contemporary Music, Wednesday 5th February 2025, 20:00 – 21:00 CET. |

Bring some (musical) colour to your day.
From Tuesday 4 February, there will be a new monthly programme on the Concertzender: Time Signal. In it, Paul Brill discusses the interaction between music and society.
Dream away on tango sounds
Ineke has been a professional drummer for over 55 years and is currently Artist in Residence at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He has worked with Pim and Ruud Jacobs and Rita Reys, and has been the permanent drummer of the Rein de Graaff/Dick Vennik Quartet since the 1970s. From 1989 to 1994 he was part of the Ben van den Dungen/Jarmo Hoogendijk quintet, with which he traveled half the world. In addition, he has accompanied, according to his own estimation, about 150 soloists ("...and many more..."), including many Americans.
“I come from a musical, creative family with nine children, where music always sounded: from Bach, Stravinsky and Stockhausen to Bob Dylan, Roxy Music and Miles Davis. We played instruments, painted, read and sang together at the harmonium. I have been singing in choirs since I was six and I also took singing lessons for many years with Evert Jan Nagtegaal, a long-time regular at the Concertzender. He regularly said that I should come and work at the Concertzender. That stuck.”
Sing Your Mother Language
On Thursday 16 January, director and musician David Lynch passed away. Music always played an important role in David Lynch's films, but he also released several albums himself, often working with composer Angelo Badalamenti.
