Music by a young Thomas Adès featured in The Previous Century

In the upcoming episode of The Last Century on Wednesday 10th July, we will once again revisit early compositions by British composer Thomas Adès.

He is one of the most prominent contemporary British composers. Adès was born in 1971, in London. Besides being a composer, he is also a conductor and pianist.

Thomas AdèsIn The Last Century, you’ll hear his first big work for orchestra: Asyla, among other pieces. He composed this piece in 1997, when he was only 26 years old. In addition to composing for a large orchestra, he composes for six percussionists and two pianists. One pianist plays both a grand piano and an upright piano, while the second plays a piano tuned a quarter tone lower. The title Asyla is intentionally ambiguous. It is the plural of the word ‘Asylum’ and can mean both sanctuary/refuge, and asylum.

In the upcoming episode on 10th July, in addition to Asyla, you will also hear his Sonata da caccia from 1993, which features an unusual combination of Baroque oboe, horn, and harpsichord. His debut string quartet, Arcadiana, which he composed a year later, will also be featured.

The first program dedicated to early works by Thomas Adès was broadcast on Wednesday 12th June.

Listen: the 2nd episode of The Last Century on the young Thomas Adès, Wednesday July 10th, 19:00 - 20:00 CET.

Looking for adventurous music

From a whisper to a scream‘Waving ………. between a whisper and a scream’ – This is more or less the subtitle, but also the identity of Dirk Serries’ monthly program Portamento.

Portamento (portamento di voce) indicates a tone moving smoothly from one to another without interruption, creating a sustained musical texture. This is what Dirk demonstrates in his program through a blend of improvised jazz, free jazz, and modern classical sound art, exploring music forms that aim to capture both the 'whisper' and the 'scream'.

In daily life, Dirk is a musician who has navigated the world of adventurous music for decades. He can be found on stages worldwide within the realm of contemporary music. In studios, he consistently works on new compositions. His body of work is a continuous exploration of various approaches to sound, unconstrained by conventions or established paths, always pursuing complete freedom. Always busy observing, dissecting, and analyzing sounds and music genres, translating these discoveries into new sonic forms, mutations, and cross-pollinations. It's an endless exploration, musicology in its most ultimate form.

Portamento is broadcast every fourth Thursday of the month between 23:00 and 00:00 CET.

Listen: the last edition of Portamento, broadcast Thursday June 27th.

Sunny side up: music from Spain

This July, the quintessential summer month, we will spend our mornings focusing on music from one of the sunniest countries in Europe: Spain.

Don Quichote at the innDrawing from what may be called the most famous Spanish book, Cervantes’ Don Quixote, we find ourselves transported to the high plateau of La Mancha. Don Quixote, besides being an endless source of inspiration for proverbs, has also provided fertile ground for musical compositions.

Program maker Peter Simmers guides listeners on 15th and 20th July through the works of Spanish composers who have translated Cervantes’ literature into music. These pieces will be complemented by works from other Spanish composers, allowing us to start our mornings immersed in a Spanish ambiance. Think of compositions by Pablo de Sarasate, Manuel de Falla, and Luys Venegas de Henestrosa, taking us on a journey through time across the Iberian Peninsula.

Listen: Morning Edition, Monday July 15th, 7:00 – 10:00 CET.

World of Jazz: The Balancing Act

FleurineWe’re still very proud of launching our new station: World of Jazz, which has been on air for two months now.

We’ve already received numerous compliments from our listeners. It’s always great to hear such positive feedback. Meanwhile, it remains a work in progress as we continue to add more programs created especially for World of Jazz.

One of our new program makers is vocalist and composer Fleurine. In her show, The Balancing Act, she features musicians in an ideal world, with an equal number of men and women. Even though the actual distribution in the music industry is very different, with only 20% being women in 2024. Fleurine also seeks a musical balance between her national and international heroes, showcasing them with mostly new releases.

The Balancing Act: every first and third Monday of the month, 20:00 – 21:00 CET
