Many Legends in Morning Edition
Legends have inspired many composers to write music. Sometimes based on a story, sometimes to create an atmosphere. Among those composers are very famous ones such as Felix Mendelssohn, Antonín Dvorák, and Jean Sibelius, but also quite obscure ones such as the Latvian Jekabs Medins, the Spaniard Reveriano Soutullo, and the Frenchwoman Marcelle Soulage. The French composer Ernest Chausson (1855–1899) was inspired by the legend of Saint Caecilia (image). New series of concerts at World of Jazz LiveNext month, we are starting new episodes of World of Jazz Live again. In these, we broadcast jazz and world music concerts that we recorded for you on Dutch stages. We also have a great collaboration with TivoliVredenburg and the Bimhuis, allowing us to regularly play beautiful concerts that they record themselves.
This month you will also hear the first concerts of the Transition Festival 2026, which we recorded together with TivoliVredenburg. We start with Danish double bassist Jasper Høiby and the Dutch group Fenix, featuring Kika Sprangers among others. Other concerts from the Transition Festival will also be featured extensively this summer. Keep an eye on the news on our website. Under the heading World of Jazz – the line-up of …, you will see there every month which concerts we have in store for you on which date. Iain Matthews@80Under the banner of Matthews@80, programme maker Marius Roeting devotes attention to Iain Matthews in various programmes. The British singer-songwriter celebrates his 80th birthday on June 16, but is still active with performances and recordings. Since the start of his professional career in 1967, he has had many successes as a solo artist, such as the worldwide hit Woodstock, a composition by Joni Mitchell. There was always a group project running on the side. His music underwent the necessary adjustments; he played everything from acoustic folk to even new wave.
In 2024, he announced his final solo album, but collaborations and projects still keep him on stage and in the studio, active as never before. The last electronic frequency from KirkIt all started for Kirk Markarian, musician, composer and programme maker on Wednesday 16 October 2019. This was the day that his first programme in our series Electronic Frequencies was broadcast on the Concertzender.
The music of acts such as Radboud Mens, Autistici, Ümlaut and Pinkcourtesyphone could often be heard in Kirk's programmes. He often managed to find the hidden gems by such artists for us to hear. Recently, Kirk has become increasingly busy with musical and visual projects, and as a result, unfortunately, he no longer has time to create the programme. We would like to thank Kirk wholeheartedly for all the time he has put into creating this wonderful programme! You can listen to all the programmes made by Kirk Markarian for the Concertzender here. Discount tickets for Stabat Mater by Pergolesi in the Concertgebouw
In addition to the Stabat Mater, Alexander will also sing Vivaldi's Nisi Dominus solo, and Emöke will perform Nulla in Mundo, also by Vivaldi. The concert takes places from 15:00 to 17:00 on Sunday 14 June 2026 in the Grote Zaal of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The Concertzender is able to offer the readers of this newsletter a discount (€ 15, -) on the tickets for this unique concert. The Concertzender in June: inspired composers and enchanting musicians
In the first week of June, programme maker Peter Simmers presents a large number of musical interpretations of legends in the Morning Editions. Originally, a legend is a folk tale with a saint as the main character. However, nowadays it also refers to old folk tales that have not been proven to be true. 
This month promises a wonderful line-up in World of Jazz Live, featuring the concert by jazz pianist Franz van Chossy at TivoliVredenburg, the Bimhuis concert by the Rembrandt Trio with Kayhan Kalhor, and the concert by Zar Electrik from the Afrika Festival.
Around the turn of the century, much changed for Matthews. Matthews' compositions became richer and more varied, with influences from folk, pop, rock, and jazz. The lyrics grew in expressiveness, and above all, his voice developed to a high level. 
This was followed by many wonderful years in which Kirk produced impressive new programmes every two months. His final programme was broadcast on Wednesday 20 May.
Young talent on stage every week
Pergolesi's Stabat Mater is one of the world’s most famous and moving compositions. World-renowned singers Alexander Chance (countertenor) and Emöke Baráth (soprano) will be performing this work on Sunday June 14 in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. They will be accompanied by the Flemish Baroque orchestra Il Gardellino.
