Concertzender remembers Marijke Ferguson (1927-2024)

Marijke FergusonLast November, music pioneer and former programme maker Marijke Ferguson passed away.

She was a household name in the world of early music and continued to produce radio programmes for the Concertzender until late in her life, including Radio Music-Essay and Antiqua versus Nova.

In memory of her, we have repeated her anniversary programme Ears pricked from 2016 on New Year's Day. We then celebrated her 50th anniversary as a presenter and radio maker with a live program in the Amsterdam Public Library. You can listen to a short Radio Music Essay from Marijke on the theme of 50 years of making radio, including interviews with and live performances by, among others, former members of Studio Laren, the early music ensemble she founded.

Meet our brand-new coordinator

From January 1, Stefan Koopmanschap will succeed the highly esteemed Hessel Veldman as the new coordinator for the Crosslinks programs at the Concertzender. We would like to introduce him to you.

Stefan KoopmanschapStefan describes himself musically as a child of the '90s, but nevertheless cannot be pigeonholed. His love of music started with alternative guitar music together with house and techno. He always pushed the boundaries: “I didn't have to be so well-behaved.” His taste in music later shifted to the more unknown: industrial, noise, (dark) ambient, IDM and much more.

“I have been a regular listener to Bob Rusche's X-Rated program for a long time. After Bob went from Kink FM to the Concertzender, I started listening to more and more programmes there. I realise that I have big shoes to fill as the new coordinator, but I will do my best to ensure that the Crosslinks programmes can continue to deliver enjoyable and stimulating music for years to come.”

Every Sunday evening you can listen to various crosslinks programmes. In January these programmes include an episode of Dr. Klangendum with Phil Harrison in a sound-art documentary titled 'Bristol sound system art punk'.

Listen: Dr. Klangendum, Monday 6 January at 00:00 - 01:00 CET.

World of Jazz becomes a multimedia platform

WorldOfJazz.nl logoAlmost all jazz writers in the Netherlands have come together on the World of Jazz platform and now provide, with a simple mouse click, access to a world of concert and CD reviews, interviews, photography and much more for all Jazz and World music enthousiasts in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Although Jazzism Magazine is no longer being printed, you can still find Jazzism, together with JazzNu, Jazzflits, JazzRadar, Jazzenzo, DraaiOmJeOren, WrittenInMusic, MixedWorldMusic and the NederlandsJazzArchief side by side in the 'Jazz in the media' slider. A great initiative, made possible by BiMpro, the Professional Association of Improvising Musicians.

Since its start in April, WorldOfJazz.nl has been the platform where you can listen to a wide range of jazz and world music programmes and soon you will also be able to watch videos. You can listen to recordings of concerts from Dutch jazz venues or click through to one of the above platforms, all of which provide their own view of our rich jazz and world music landscape.

Daniel HerskedalEnjoy Northern Lights every week in 2025

From January 7, 2025, we will broadcast our Northern Lights programme weekly on Tuesday evenings. Northern Lights is a programme with contemporary music from Scandinavia and the Baltic states.

This is necessary because want to give enough our attention to all the exceptional music that is coming out of those countries. The entire spectrum of classical and crossover is covered as well as a lot of jazz, because the jazz scene is alive and kicking over there.

In the first episode of the New Year we listen to new music by Norwegian tuba player Daniel Herskedal and further explore the work of Danish composer Herman Koppel.

Listen: Northern Lights, Tuesday 7 January 22:00 - 23:00 CET.

Podcast series about pianist Noël Lee

podcast Noël LeeIn December we commemorated the work of a great pianist: Noël Lee, in honour of the centenary of his birth. Reason enough for Evert Jan Nagtegaal and Hans Meerman to have created a podcast series.

The series consists of five consecutive episodes, each of which highlights a different aspect of Noël Lee. There is attention to both his work as an ensemble player and to his own compositions. We also discuss his important work as a song pianist and of course as a solo pianist.

Concertzender Podcasts Noël Lee – five episodes, starting from 25 December 2024:
