Willem van ManenIn Memoriam Willem van Manen

On Thursday 26th September, jazz pioneer Willem van Manen passed away in a traffic accident. From 2005 to 2019, he was the editor-in-chief of Jazz at Concertzender. He was the first ‘famous’ jazz musician to commit himself to the channel, and – partly because of that stature – he was adored by the entire editorial team; that has always been the case.

Willem was at the cradle of Dutch improvised music and, not only with his music, but also thanks to his organizational skills, made a very important contribution to the development of jazz and improvised music in the Netherlands; he was one of the four or five founders of the Bimhuis in 1974.

Theme: George Benjamin

George BenjaminThe Theme broadcast on Wednesday 9th October will focus on the British composer and conductor George Benjamin (64), who studied with Messiaen in Paris at the age of seventeen and was described as his ‘favourite pupil’ by his mentor.

Benjamin himself has long been one of the most appealing voices in the world of modern music. His second opera Written on Skin (2012) was so successful, with over a hundred performances in the first few years after its premiere, that critics made comparisons with Alban Berg’s Wozzeck.

That is why Theme will include pieces from Written on Skin. The first piece he wrote when he emerged from Messiaen’s wings at the age of 22 (At First Light) will also be performed. He will also conduct works that are stylistically close to him (Ligeti and Murail). Of course, music by Messiaen will also be included (Les offrandes oubliées). Follow the link below to see the full playlist.

Listen: Theme, Wednesday October 9th, 20:00 - 22:00 CET.

Festival Dag in de Branding (Day in the Surf)

During edition 71 of the Festival Dag in de Branding, a lot of saxophones can be heard on October 19th. This is thanks to composer Jan-Peter de Graaff, who co-curated the festival as guest curator.

In addition to the saxophone, this edition has another common thread. The festival programme is put together around the theme 'between the city and the sea' - very appropriate for the coastal city of The Hague, where De Graaff studied at the conservatory.
