Walid Ben Selim and Jaber Fayad are our guests in Acoustic Roots on Friday 16 February 2018 (21:00-22:00 CET). They will be performing live and will also talk about their music with presenter Karin van den Boogeart.

Singer, poet and freethinker Walid Ben Selim was born in the Moroccan city Casablanca and was active in the local hiphop scene there for a long time. He now lives in France and leads the succesful band N3rdistan. In this band he sings and raps his own texts as well as poetry written by famous Arab poets. Freedom is the timeless subject of these texts and he places them in a musical universe that combines East and West.

Jaber Fayad starting playing the oud, the Arab lute, when he was young. He studied at the Conservatory in Damascus where his studies included the music from Azerbadjan with Askar Ali Akbar, Arab music with Isam Rafei and Turkish music with Ayman Aljesri. Jaber Fayad comes from Damascus but fled Syria in 2015. Music gave him and the other refugees strength during this dangerous journey. Walid en Jaber met in 2016 in the refugee centre in Utrecht, and this was the beginning of a succesful partnership. They performed together in June last year during the Cultural Sunday festival in Utrecht.

Kytopia

Walid Ben Selim first came to Utrecht in 2015 at the invitation of the organisation Culture Connection and DJ/producer Arjen de Vreede. It was the start of a close cooperation with the musicians from the Utrecht collective Kytopia. In November 2017 he was back in Utrecht for the Le Guess Who festival. On the same day he was also our guest and gave a live performance in the Kargadoor where his voice left a deep impression on the audience.

Walid Ben Selim and Kytopia are now again in the studio; this time they are recording their first CD which is planned for release later in 2018.
