Our new series Opera in the 20th century is broadcast every Tuesday at 14:00 CET starting from Tuesday 10th January.
We
are very enthousiastic about this new series that will take a
systematic look at opera and the related music styles that have
developed during the 20th century such as operetta and the zarzuela (Spanish opera). It
is surprising how many operas composed in the 20th century by both
well-known and lesser-known composers are no longer heard today. Our
chronological approach in this series brings us closer to the composers
and the times in which they lived. It becomes clear how changes in
society, and there were a lot of those in the 20th century, influenced
their music. Through this music we gain an insight into the history of
the period.
The production the series was sometimes a challenge. Often, there
were no longer any records available, and sometimes only fragments on
record, and so we have used historical recordings of performances in
many cases. But this does make the programme more authentic. Ultimately
there was enough material to make two one-hour long programmes about
each year starting from 1930. We are sure that the pleasure that we had
in making the series will be matched by the pleasure that you will have
as listeners.
Broadcasts: from 10 January 2017, every Tuesday from 14:00 to 15:00 CET.
