Acoustic Roots: Jonatan Alvarado
live in the Kargadoor

On Wednesday 9th November we're making another radio recording in the Kargadoor in Utrecht. Our guest is singer and baroque guitarist Jonatan Alvarado.

Jonatan Alvarado is Argentinian. In the past he's played in De Musyck Kamer, an Early Music Concertzender programme. We were very impressed by his singing and playing of early Argentinian folk music and immediately thought that Jonatan should be in Acoustic Roots. It's finally happened!Jonatan Alvarado

Early Music or World Music?

The genre World Music is the name
of a broad musical landscape: folk music with its roots in diverse
cultures and times. Sometimes the roots are so deep and go so far
back that musicologists have their doubts. Where is the boundary between Early Music and early folk music?

Authentic performance practice

Jonatan Alvarado began studying modern guitar at the Conservatorio Martinez Zarate in his birthplace Mercedes, in Buenos Aires province. Shortly afterwards he started a Bachelor's Degree in Orchestral Conducting and Composition at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata in Argentina. At the same time he also studied singing. He discovered and embraced early music while singing Bach motets . He assembled a baroque orchestra, played Charpentier, Scarlatti, Telemann and Bach, and was even responsible for the first Argentinian performance of Bach's St John Passion according to authentic performance practice.

Afterwards he moved to the Netherlands. He's currently studying singing and Basso Continuo for plucked instruments at the Amsterdam Conservatorium. He has also assembled an ensemble in the Netherlands: Seconda Prat!ca. They've just released their first CD.

Jonatan Alvarado will sing and play early Argentinian folk in the Kargadoor. Pure roots and entirely acoustic: Acoustic Roots with Jonatan Alvarado.
