What? Is this really Czerny's?

Carl CzernyIn the weekly programme Absolutely Classical (every Wednesday from 2 to 3 pm, every first Wednesday of the month excepted) a four-part series about Carl Czerny
(1791-1857) will be broad-
cast in March.

When hearing his name many people think about the endless studying of etudes that were dry as dust. And Czerny was afraid that - were he to miserably fail with a symphony or a string quartet - he would damage
his reputation as a decent piano teacher. That's why, for example, some forty string quartets remained shelved.

High time to do something about
that, the Sheridan Ensemble
thought, and they recorded a
double CD with four beautiful
string quartets. An utter surprise which triggered programme maker/host Thijs Bonger to make a few programmes about the composer. Carl Czerny, student and friend of Beethoven's, teacher of Liszt, has been shamefully neglected by both audience and musicology - according to Mr Bonger. An attempt at rehabilitation therefore in the episodes of Absolutely Classical of 9, 16, 23 and 30 March (2 - 3 pm).
